The UN Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution involving the release by Israel of the Palestinian territories by the end of 2017, according to Reuters. Veto the vote on draft benefited the US.
For the adoption of the draft resolution voted 8 states, including Russia, China, France, Luxembourg, Jordan, Argentina, Chile and Chad. Together with the United States against the document spoke Australia, five countries (United Kingdom, South Korea, Lithuania, Nigeria and Rwanda) – abstained.
The draft resolution last week officially introduced in the UN Security Council Jordan. The draft document obliges to withdraw all Israeli troops from the Palestinian territories by the end of 2017 and calls for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which should be based on several parameters, including the establishment of Israel and Palestine within the 1967 borders.
Permanent Representative of Jordan at the UN Dina Kawar expressed regret that the resolution was rejected. “We had hoped that the Security Council today will take the Arab draft resolution, because the Council is legally and morally responsible for the solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” – she said.
In turn, the US ambassador to the Organization Samantha Power explained that the document was rejected because it does not take into account the interests of Israel. “The United States every day looking for new ways to take positive steps to support both sides to make progress towards a peaceful settlement of the conflict”, – she said. “The Security Council resolution, presented before us today is not one of these constructive steps. This text refers to the problems of only one side “- she said, adding that the document would undermine the efforts to reach an agreement between the two countries.
Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vitaly Churkin disagreed with the position of the United States. “We can not share the objections of those who believe that the draft resolution undermines the prospects of the negotiation process”, – Tass quoted him as saying.
«Unfortunately, the past year has witnessed how this process has reached a dead end in the conditions of its monopolization of the United States and the removal of the Middle East “Quartet” – said Churkin.
He regretted the fact that the UN Security Council failed to adopt a draft resolution on Palestine. “The inaction of the Security Council in this respect condemns the dangerous situation in the status quo, which can not be tolerated. Some good hope is not enough “, – explained his position Churkin.
