Repeated powerful earthquake struck off the coast of New Guinea – Kommersant

New quake, which had a magnitude of 6.1 occurred in the waters of Solomon Sea near the southern coast of the island of New Ireland (Papua – New Guinea), “Interfax” referring to the Geophysical Service of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to seismologists, the epicenter recorded at 03:15 MSK Monday quake had the coordinates -5.16 degrees south latitude and 152.60 degrees east longitude and is about 50 km from the coast. According to the intensity of tremors in the epicenter of the earthquake is estimated as “destructive».

It has been previously registered the first earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.4. It came about in the same area just south at 02:48 MSK, the intensity of tremors in the epicenter of it was evaluated as “scathing».
