The Kremlin denies Putin’s ultimatum on the fate of Assad in talks with Kerry – RBC

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin during talks with the US Department of State, John Kerry did not discuss participation of Bashar al-Assad in the election of the president of Syria in 2017, spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov.

In this earlier, Reuters, citing diplomatic sources reported that Russian officials informally talk about preparedness agree to the withdrawal of Bashar al-Assad as president of Syria at the end of the transitional period. Western diplomats have argued that Moscow allegedly prepared a list of possible successors to Assad.

December 18 the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Syria, which includes negotiations of the Syrian opposition and the Syrian authorities. Monitoring the process of political settlement in the country will implement the UN. The draft resolution also suggests that in the next 18 months after the start of work on the draft of a new constitution in Syria will be elections under international supervision.
