The International Criminal Court starts investigation of crimes Saakashvili’s army – BBC News

The prosecutor’s office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) begins to investigate the Georgian-Ossetian conflict in 2008. This was reported in the press release of the court.

Including it comes to crimes against humanity – murder, forcible transfer of population and persecution, as well as war crimes – attacks on civilians, deliberate murder, intentionally directing attacks against peacekeepers, destruction of property and looting.

The Chamber He believes that the investigation would be “in the interests of justice, taking into account the gravity of the crime and the interests of victims”.

The process of investigation is likely to last several years. At any time after the start of the investigation the prosecutor is entitled to submit to the Pre-Trial Chamber for the issuance of arrest warrants for some of the suspects. The Chamber shall consider the application and agrees to issue a warrant if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the person has committed a crime (or crimes), fall under the jurisdiction of the court, and that the arrest of the person appears necessary.

Then, a hearing to the confirmation of charges. If the decision is positive, the Presidency of the ICC shall constitute a Trial Chamber which is responsible for conducting the trial.
