Vladivostok, October 2 2015, 13:22 – REGNUM The Chairman of the Russian Supreme Court Vyacheslav Lebedev, endorsed the idea of expanding the competence of human rights defenders jury. This Lebedev said at a press conference at the International Legal Forum of the Asia-Pacific region.
In response to a reporter’s question about the attitude of Lebedev’s criticism of the Russian judicial system, in particular of the jury by the human rights activists, he said, human rights activists support the idea of empowerment.
«We support if Human rights activists believe that juries should consider increasing the number of cases, and criminal and civil, “- he said.
Lebedev thus specified that before empower juries additional powers, the issue should be resolved at the legislative level . “Take the law, it is a matter for the legislators” – he said.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Russian Federation Ella Pamfirova at a meeting of the Presidential Council on Human Rights called the Institute of jury trials in Russia “degrading.”
