In an interview with Russian television on December 9 Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that since Ukraine is on the verge of associated membership with the EU, with the January 1, 2016 preferential trade regime it should end. “They need to understand that on January 1 over a period that we deliberately chose to tailor our economies, to join the existing rules on the CIS free trade zone with the EU rules. We have specially negotiated, as they say,” for three “- Europeans, Ukraine and Russia, “- said Medvedev.
The Association Agreement
In March 2014, Ukraine signed the political part of the agreement on association with the EU, and in June of the same year – the economic part. September 12, 2014 in Brussels, the Russian Federation, Ukraine and the EU agreed to postpone the establishment of a free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU and to maintain free trade in the CIS up to December 31, 2015.
During this period, a number of Ukrainian goods was right duty-free access to the European market, while European exports to Ukraine are still subject to duties.
For the full entry into force of the Association Agreement with the January 1, 2016 had to be ratified by all 28 EU Member States .
In October 2015, a document ratified by the parliaments of Cyprus, and in November – the Greek Parliament. At the same time in the Netherlands, April 6, 2016 held a consultative referendum on an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU, despite the fact that this country has also previously ratified agreement.
How to lose Ukraine
Prohibition of exports to Russia is Ukraine billions of dollars in damages and tens of thousands of unemployed, the leader of the public movement “Ukrainian choice” Viktor Medvedchuk.
“If access Ukrainian exports to the Russian Federation will be closed, it will not only mean billions of dollars of losses (experts talk about $ 35 billion), but also tens of thousands of unemployed in Ukraine. And despite the fact that unemployment in the country and so rolls over “- he wrote in his article.
The politician stressed that $ 600 million of losses from the Russian prodembargo, which said earlier Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk – is only the direct financial losses from the decline in exports, and even then not completely. “It is necessary to take into account that agricultural production, like any other sector of the economy – a complex economic mechanism, and the end result (in this case export) provides a lot of different businesses,” – said Medvedchuk.
As a result, the introduction of the Russian embargo affected not only industry, but also the population. “Industrialists are selling do not air, and a specific product made by hand just ordinary Ukrainians. There will be no industrialists sales, will not work and ordinary Ukrainians, the relationship is more than obvious,” – he said.
Medvedchuk also criticized the government proposed an alternative to the Russian market – orientation of the EU market, calling it “a mockery.” In this context, considers Medvedchuk, suffice it to recall the statement of European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström that the EU “does not address the additional increase under the quota or even for any quota Ukraine.”
