Died German writer and Nobel laureate Günter Grass – BBC Russian

In Germany, at the age of 87 years died a German writer and Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 Günter Grass.

According to the Fund of the writer, he died in Monday morning at a hospital in Luebeck.

Günter Grass was born October 16, 1927 in the Free City of Danzig (now Gdansk).

He gained worldwide recognition after his first novel “The Tin Drum”, describes the atmosphere of Nazi Germany and published in many countries, including the Soviet Union.

Since then, many readers around the world Günter Grass became the voice of generations of Germans who grew up during the Second World War, and carried on their shoulders the burden of guilt for the crimes of German Nazism.

Among the most popular novels of Grasse – “Cat and Mouse” (1961) and “Dog Years” (1963). These two books with “tin drum” made famous Danzig trilogy.

Later years were marred by scandals writer in connection with his own role during the Nazi era and its contradictory attitude toward Israel.
