MOSCOW, December 31 – RIA Novosti. The United States has “strongly opposed” the accession of Palestine to the International Criminal Court (ICC), fearing that it may adversely affect the course of the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
“It would be counterproductive and in no way contributed to the implementation of the aspirations of the Palestinian people to the establishment of a sovereign and independent state,” – said in a statement the State Department, which leads AFP.
Abbas intends to appeal the International Criminal Court to accept Palestine as its members to continue to seek the adoption of UN Security Council resolution on ending the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel. Resolution instructing Israel for three years to withdraw from the West Bank and East Jerusalem to create there an independent Palestinian state, scored in the UN Security Council only eight votes out of nine and received the necessary veto by the United States.
“As we have stated previously, the United States continues to oppose the action – on both sides – that can undermine (mutual – Ed.) trust and engender doubts about the willingness of the parties to negotiate peace. Our position remains unchanged “- said at the State Department.
As said earlier Sputnik member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Vasil Abu Yousef, head of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas convene an emergency meeting of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization to discuss further steps that should be taken after the failure of the resolution to terminate the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel in the UN Security Council.
