Washington denounced Moscow for the warm reception of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Reuters reported with reference to the White House spokesman Eric Schultz.

«We see the warm welcome al-Assad, who has used chemical weapons against his own people, as contrary to stated Russian objectives to promote the political transition of power in Syria,” – he said.

The meeting of the presidents of Russia Vladimir Putin and Syria and Bashar al-Assad took place on October 20 in Moscow. He noted that the presidents had discussed the fight against extremist terrorist groups, as well as the continuation of Russian operations in Syria and support the army offensive in Damascus.

The talks between the two leaders was held behind closed doors. According to the source “Kommersant”, such a request to the Russian leadership asked Assad. Interlocutor publication did not rule out that the two sides discussed the possibility of early presidential elections in Syria.

Since the operation in Syria, Russia has stated that the primary objective is the fight against terrorism, and only then a political settlement of the situation in Syria. On Wednesday, October 21, a spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the results of talks between Putin and Assad, confirmed this idea.

«To talk about a political settlement in the conditions remain the dominant threat in the country, which is fraught with the collapse of the SAR [Syrian Arab Republic], the loss of territorial integrity, political integrity, is not necessary. So first priority is the fight against the terrorist extremist organizations, and then to a certain political settlement. It should be noted that the Russian side and the Syrian side, the rest of the country is absolutely unanimous that there is no alternative to a diplomatic settlement “, – he said.
