The leaders of eight European Union countries sent the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, a letter objecting to expansion of the “Nord Stream-2″ project.
A letter signed by the heads of governments of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia and Romania, as well as the President of Lithuania, informs Reuters. Two anonymous sources told the news agency that the latest letter version also signed Croatia, but the publication has not been able to obtain confirmation of the government of the country.
In the document, according to the media, said that “Nord Stream-2″ will cause ” potentially destabilizing geopolitical consequences. ” The letter further explained that the project “can represent certain risks to energy security of Central and Eastern Europe.” The authors specify that the extension of the gas pipeline “will have a strong influence on the development of the gas market and gas transit scheme in the region, and especially on the transit route through Ukraine».
The letter is dated March 7. The European Commission said the agency, which can confirm the receipt of the letter.
It should be noted, on March 17 in Brussels will host a summit of the European Union, which, in particular, will be discussed issues of energy security. At the December summit of the extension “Nord Stream” has caused a fierce debate after Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has accused Germany of violating the spirit of anti-Russian sanctions because of the support of Berlin project.
The second branch of the pipeline “Nord Stream”, laid on the Baltic sea, is to increase the volume of gas supplies to Germany doubled to 110 billion cubic meters per year. The consortium for the project includes the addition of the Russian “Gazprom” German companies E.ON and Wintershall, Shell Anglo-Dutch, Austrian OMV and the French ENGIE.
