The official Tokyo intends to demand from Moscow to respect the 2001 agreement on ways to resolve the border dispute on the four Kuril Islands, which belong territorial disputes, Japan. As reported by Kyodo, citing a source in the government, the administration of Shinzo Abe wants to make sure that the countries share similar views on the ways to solve the problem and only then set a date for the official visit of President Vladimir Putin to Japan.

In report notes that Japan is ready to discuss the fate of the four disputed islands, “and not part of them.” Tokyo is concerned about the growing, in his opinion, Russian activity in these islands, the construction of infrastructure and military exercises in the area.

President’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov on Monday, July 20, said that the Kremlin is not aware when President Putin will visit Japan. “At the moment no fixed dates are clearly not” – said Peskov (quoted by TASS).

At the same time, he assured that “Russia has been and remains open to any contact, especially with one of the closest neighbors, such as Japan ».

In March 2001, President Vladimir Putin met in Irkutsk with the then Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori. Negotiations leaders alone lasted about one and a half hours, then continued in an extended format.

In his speech, Putin referred to the joint Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956, which provides for the transfer of the Kurile Islands of Japan two of the four provided the signing of a peace treaty. However, Putin said at the time that this document does not specify the conditions of transfer of the islands and the parties have different interpretations of its provisions.

At the end of 2014 the press-secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that Putin plans to visit Japan 2015, however, the exact dates he did not elaborate. This Peskov said that the Russian President and the Prime Minister of Japan are going to continue to work on a peace treaty.

Deputy Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, former Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura in May 2015 after a meeting with the Speaker of the State Duma meeting Sergei Naryshkin said that the Japanese authorities expect to sign a peace treaty with Russia during Vladimir Putin’s visit to Tokyo. “We would like to conclude a peace treaty by solving the territorial issue – and for this we would like to see President Putin arrived in Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is very seriously thinking about it “, – assured Komura.

In June 2015, Kyodo reported that during the meeting of Russian President with the leaders of the world’s major news agencies in St. Petersburg, Putin expressed the desire to spend talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “One Russia can not do anything. We expect movement on the Japanese side, “- the agency quoted the Russian president.
