Painting by Pablo Picasso sold in New York for a record $ 179 million – RBC

The painting “Women of Algeria» (Les femmes d’Alger) initially estimated by experts at Christie’s $ 140 million. Bidding started at $ 100 million, but in the course of a bitter dispute, the applicants in the picture, to trade via telephone, brought the price down to 179.365 million dollars. Commission auction was 12%, reports Reuters.

The previous record was set in November 2013, when Christie’s for $ 142.4 million was sold to Francis Bacon’s triptych “Three Studies of Lucian Freud.

The painting “Women of Algeria” has long belonged to American collectors Victor and Sally Ganz. 18 years, they sold it to a collector from London. The cost of painting in 1997 was $ 31 million.

The value of the painting “Women of Algiers” that is in fact the only work by Picasso, which is owned by a private person. The artist painted it in 1955 in memory of his friend Henri Matisse, who died a year earlier.

The name of the new owner of the web, as well as the name of the previous owner of the painting is kept secret.
