The International Criminal Court (ICC) authorized the Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda begin to investigate crimes committed during the armed conflict in Georgia in South Ossetia during the period from 1 July to 10 October 2008.
According to a report on the website of the ICC, there is reason to believe that in South Ossetia the crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of the court. In particular, we are talking about crimes against humanity (murder, forcible resettlement of people) and war crimes (attacks against the civilian population, deliberate killing, looting).
The ICC said that the crimes were allegedly committed during the armed conflict in the period from 1 July to 10 October.
In November last year, Fatou Bensouda asked permission to start investigations into the 2008 conflict. According to the prosecutor of the ICC, murder, forced resettlement of Georgians conducted by military in South Ossetia (with the possible participation of Russian forces). In addition, the investigation will cover intentional attacks on the forces of the Georgian peacekeepers (the suspected South Ossetian forces) and Russian peacekeepers (the suspected Georgian army).
