Shoigu expressed his condolences on the death of the chief of the GRU Sergunov – RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, January 4 – RIA Novosti. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu expressed condolences to the families and friends of the chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the General Staff of the Russian Federation Igor Sergunov due to his sudden death, according to management press service and information of the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces – Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Colonel-General Sergun Igor Dmitrievich died January 3, 2016 at the 59 th year of life.

“Russian Defense Minister, Army General Sergei Shoigu on behalf of the leadership of the military establishment expressed his condolences to the families and friends of Colonel-General Igor Sergun” – said in a statement.

Sergun was born in 1957 in Podolsk, near Moscow. After graduating from the Moscow Suvorov Military School and the Moscow Higher Military Command of the Order of Lenin Red Banner School named after the Supreme Soviet military service as commander of a motorized infantry platoon in the Far Eastern Military District, commander of a platoon, then a company of cadets in the Omsk Higher Military Command School, an officer of the Department of the Army Staff Air Defence .

After graduating in 1987 from the Military Academy of the Soviet Army Sergun served in the organizational structures of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

In 1997, he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff. In December 2011, by decree of the Russian president was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces – Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

Sergun was a candidate of military sciences. Was awarded the Order “For Services to the Fatherland” IV degree, “For Military Merit,” Honor, a medal “For Services to the Fatherland” II degree, “For Military Merit” and other awards.
