Duma suspended the free trade agreement with Ukraine – BBC Russian

State Duma adopted the law, initiated by the President of Russia on the suspension of the Agreement on free trade zone with Ukraine.

The deputies voted for this decision at once in the first reading and as a whole. For the adoption of the law voted in all four factions of the State Duma.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 16 signed a decree which states that the agreement on free trade zone in respect of Ukraine shall be suspended from 1 January 2016.

In the explanatory memorandum states that “the Ukrainian side has actually abandoned the development of trade and economic cooperation within the CIS and chosen the path of progress towards comprehensive integration with the European Union”.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, said earlier that Ukrainian economy will suffer losses as a result of this decision of Moscow. He expressed regret at the decision of the Russian authorities to suspend the contract.

The agreement on free trade zone with Ukraine was signed in 2011 and called for duty-free trade, liberalization of the conditions for the exchange of goods, as well as the coordination of supply.

In this and last year Russia has imposed a ban on the import into the country some Ukrainian goods. So, Rospotrebnadzor found in Ukrainian dairy products banned and harmful substances, and the potatoes – pests. In addition, it was banned imports of juices and baby food, confectionery products, as well as fish, vegetable and fruit canned food.
