UN 18 December – RIA Novosti. The UN Security Council reaffirmed the need to respect the sovereignty of Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

At the conference of the International Support Group Syria, which brought together the foreign ministers of 18 countries participated, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, US Secretary of State John Kerry and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura, the representatives of the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The result of the negotiations of the International Support Group Syria became the agreed draft UN Security Council resolution, which is intended to confirm the principles previously adopted by the Vienna document on the Syrian settlement.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously approved the Geneva Communique and Viennese statements as a basis for a political transition in Syria. The Security Council also stressed the need for the mechanism of “monitoring, verification and reporting” the cease-fire.
